With it’s barn-like structure, Linc KL stands out strikingly and is easily one of the more distinctive architecture in the city, compared to its towering concrete and sky-scraping neighbours.

LINC KL: A Contemporary Barn in the Heart of the City

Although officially opened only at the end of 2018, LINC KL has already become a familiar architectural highlight among urban dwellers, thanks largely to its growing popularity on social media. With an abundance of Instagrammable spaces and an architectural style often described as neo‑hipster, LINC KL is well on its way to becoming a must‑visit destination—whether for dining, coffee, or simply soaking in the atmosphere.

Beyond its role as a social media backdrop, LINC KL offers a calm and tranquil ambience that can only truly be appreciated in person.

Rustic Inspiration, Reimagined

Inspired by the concept of a country barn, LINC KL features high exterior walls that amplify the perception of generous spatial volume. A combination of sharp edges and clean lines accentuates its geometric form, while rising vertical glass panels are paired with classic red brick to create a rustic‑modern façade.

This design language continues into the interior, where raw concrete walls are complemented by black steel fittings and nature‑inspired elements. While raw‑finish interiors are not new, the way these elements are brought together at LINC KL gives the style a fresh perspective. The result is a space that feels familiar and comfortable, subtly reinforcing the natural theme that shaped its design blueprint.

If the contrast between country‑barn inspiration and raw, urban design elements does not immediately captivate visitors, the surrounding greenery surely will. More than a visual feature, the landscaping wraps the architecture in a sense of peace and tranquillity—a rare experience in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s dense urban environment.

So ‘Barn’ Beautiful

One of the most recognisable features of barn‑style architecture is its roof form. Typically defined by an elongated triangular profile, the roof slopes down close to the midpoint of the side walls, creating a larger internal volume.

For LINC KL, the design and architectural team reinterpreted this traditional form into a bold contemporary statement. Additional angles were introduced to the triangular roof and enclosed at the base, forming a striking hexagonal protrusion. This structure serves as both the main roof and a distinctive architectural feature, giving LINC KL its iconic façade.

The Beauty of the Roof

Bringing this reimagined barn roof to life presented the project’s first major challenge: selecting a roofing and wall cladding material that could meet all design and performance requirements.

As the roof extends seamlessly down the walls, the material needed to allow smooth, continuous surfaces without protruding edges. High flexibility was essential to enable complex shaping without visual disruption, while durability was required to withstand urban heat island effects.

Colour selection was equally important. The intent was to achieve a natural yet contemporary and vibrant appearance, using a palette that could be combined to inject energy and character into the building.

To meet these objectives, COLORBOND® steel was selected for both roofing and wall cladding. Well known within the Australian building and architectural community, COLORBOND® steel offered the ideal balance of strength, flexibility and proven performance in harsh environments, along with a wide range of colours.

For LINC KL, the design team chose Autumn Red, Almond Beige, Sunflower Gold and Aquamarine from the COLORBOND® steel range. To achieve the required profiles and shapes, the steel was roll‑formed by Swissma Snapwelt, a partner who fully understood the design vision.

With the right material and the right expertise in place, the final piece of the puzzle came together. LINC KL now stands confidently—not as a traditional barn, but as a bold, contemporary reinterpretation with a strong architectural identity.

In Harmony with Nature

While many shopping centres feature fountains or sculptures as centrepieces, LINC KL welcomes visitors with three majestic ficus trees, which form the heart of the building upon entry.

These trees are not simply decorative. They have been growing on the site for decades, representing one of the last remaining green pockets in the city. Rather than removing them, the developer chose to preserve the trees, adapting the design of LINC KL to allow them to remain in their original location.

Achieving harmony between architecture and nature was no coincidence. Preserving the ficus trees posed one of the greatest challenges for the design and architectural team, who needed to provide sufficient space for growth while allowing natural light to filter through—without exposing patrons to outdoor weather conditions.

The solution was an extensive use of glass walls and windows, introducing another key material that contributes to the building’s distinctive architectural composition.

Life at LINC KL

With the ficus trees as its centrepiece, LINC KL becomes more than a commercial space. The trees act as a natural landmark, helping visitors orient themselves among cafés, retail outlets and the grocer within the mall.

Today, patrons dine beneath the canopy of these towering trees, which have witnessed decades of Kuala Lumpur’s transformation. On a quiet afternoon, visitors may even enjoy their coffee accompanied by birdsong or the sight of squirrels darting through the branches—moments of nature returning to the city amidst its modern urban landscape.

A Place for Human Connection

Beyond preserving greenery, LINC KL is designed to foster human connection. Its architecture does not only link people with nature, but also brings people together.

Through ceiling‑high nature‑inspired murals, art installations, and over 41,600 origami doves in 40 colours symbolising peace, love and unity, the space encourages reflection and interaction. Open areas allow patrons to pause and appreciate views of the ficus trees, offering moments of calm despite being located at one of Kuala Lumpur’s busiest intersections.

In every sense, LINC KL is more than a destination—it is a sanctuary where architecture, nature and people coexist in harmony.
